                                                                    JUSTICE LEAGUE: THRONE OF ATLANTIS

In a follow up to Justice League War DC Animated  brings us it's latest comic book to film adaption, Justice League: Throne Of Atlantis, the source material being that from writer Geoff Johns Aqua man run in the new 52. In Throne Of Atlantis we see Arthur Curry's story to how he became the eventual king of the sea... Aquaman!, as he learns of his origins in Atlantis and how he is the heir to the Throne, all whilst coming to terms with who he is on land. On the journey to become king we meet Orm  (Ocean Master) as he attempts to wage war on the surface world.

Arthur Curry and his soon to be Justice League compatriots must work together as they begin to cross paths with Atlantis and its tyrant ruler Orm when weapons of mass destruction are stolen from an underwater military submarine. With the Voice talent of Jason O’Mara, Christopher Gorham, Shemar Moore and Sean Astin returning as Batman, The Flash, Cyborg and Shazam and with a few inclusions the voice acting is fantastic as is the Animation much similar to JLA War before it. Where Thone Of Atlantis fails is due to the pace in which it rushed its material, its rushes through so much it becomes diluted and almost unnecessary {superman and wonder woman's relationship for one} with limited screen time for many important plot details.

With upcoming DC films Batman: Court Of Owls and  Justice League: Gods and Monsters. Both of which are set for 2015 releases to look forward to, Its rushed feeling and convoluted storytelling Throne Of Atlantis provides us with an average DC animated film to pass the time, if it was up to me I would just go watch Batman: Under The Red Hood for the 10th time.

                                                                        5.8/10
                            TOP 10 MOST DISSAPOINTING/WORST FILMS OF 2014

   10.  Blended -    With Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore starring in both The Wedding Singer  and    50 first Dates together which were fan favorites. Blended failed to capture the fun and humor of the there previous films, Blended  was dummed down family film, Sandler's just collecting them checks.

 9. Lets Be Cops -The initial setup of this film could have been a funny premise for a B-plot on a show but instead, the idea is stretched into a never-ending feature that fails to find any chemistry between Johnson and Wayans. Also doing what so many comedies do and used its best moments in trailers

   8.  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - These heroes in an half shell hit the big screen in a .. mediocre  way with Michael Bay producing known to most as the man who ruined transformers, Bays name is now associated with a "meh" Turtles movie that  had endless amounts of history to draw from, be it  the many animated series or the original comic books, they chose to take their own lackluster approach.

  7. 300 Rise Of An Empire - I gave 300: Rise of an Empire a shot because I loved the original 300 and Zack Snyder was back in a producing capacity. Little did I know, though, that it would end up being a….honestly, I don’t even remember. I recall a lot of boats and yelling, but literally nothing else about this film.

 6.  Annabelle - Hey, remember that movie The Conjuring? Remember how it was pretty creepy and based on a true story? Do you also remember how the intro sequence to the film featured the possessed doll, Annabelle?. Well they made a movie about it.. it sucked

5.  Transformers 4: Age of Extinction - It had Dinobots and Mark Wahlberg how could this be bad.. sigh it just sucked

4. The Expendables 3 - Sylvester Stallone, refusing to go gentle into the night, drags his old ass action stars along with him now including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson  in a most desperate action movie. It's  hard to watch the greats brought low.

3. A Million Ways To Die In The West -  I think this movie would have been better had Seth MacFarlane had hired another actor for the role. The problem was, we all KNEW we were watching MacFarlane. That, matched up with some fairly flat writing and a few gross out jokes just led to this film being way over-hyped and far too unfunny. Maybe if there was a stuffed bear in it smoking a bong it would’ve worked better. Who knows?

2. Transcendence - Am I the only one who's tired of Johnny Depp? with a strong cast and some heavy themes about where we may be heading, technologically speaking, Transcendence turns into a boring timewasting film with Depp's performance being one of the most phoned in ones I've seen. reminds me of a certain Sandler

And coming in at number 1

The Amazing Spiderman 2 -  Im a comic book guy and I love anything superhero that's why this one hurt the most!. Just want to say that how the filmmakers handled the Gwen Stacy incident

was brilliant, and that is such a shame, because most of the other stuff around that moment was just horrible.
The major problem with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was that it wanted to be everything to everyone. It tried to be a love story, a snarky comedy, an action film, a family drama and a summer blockbuster, and in the end, it just felt like a contrived mess that threw far too much at us (which is a lesson they should have learned from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3).
As far as movies from 2014 go in terms of being over-hyped and massively underwhelming

                                       BIRDMAN
                               Soars above the rest

One of the most accomplished and visionary Director's in Hollywood,  Alejandro Gonzalez's brings us Birdman or "The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance" . 2015 Golden Globe winner and Oscar favorite Michael Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a washed up movie star known who's career is only defined by his role of Birdman in a blockbuster movie franchise many years earlier. Now divorced from ex-wife Sylvia (Amy Ryan) and attempting to mend his relationship with troubled daughter Sam (Emma Stone), Riggan mounts a stage production of a Raymond Carver story on Broadway. As opening night approaches, Thomson is propelled headlong towards a transformational crisis, battling his fellow actors (Naomi Watts, Edward Norton and Andrea Rise borough), the film’s producer (Zach Galifianakis) but mostly his own inner demons – which take the form of his former superhero character, Birdman. Thomson meditates, drinks, hallucinates and fights his way to what in inevitably unfortunate end.

Birdman 's satirical approach about celebrity hood, differences between cinema and theatre and negative thoughts on critics {fantastic rant provided in film }. As Thomson's is slow decline into madness giving into the voices we all here, the inner monologues that attempt to derail ones life. Cinematographer  Emmanuel Lubezki shoots the film as if it was a single take, with the camera never leaving our actors the difficulty of which could not be measured, but astounds never the less. Direction and Cinematography alone elevate this intense adrenaline fuelled film, with benefits from its drum score {Antonio Sanchez}. An already an award winning Birdman Fly's above all.

                                      JOHN WICK
                                 John Wicked Movie

Years from now we may be speaking of John Wick as Keanu's Comeback and what a comeback it is indeed. Keanu Reeves stars in this action packed film directed  by former stuntmen and chorographer's David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. John Wick's premise is not an overly complicated one, well its quite simple really. As John Wick {Reeves} a former hitman is forced from retirement to exact revenge on the gang who left him for dead.. and his beloved dog's killer {that was gifted to him from his deceased wife}. An Exceptional revenge tale that involves Mafias, Hit men, Car chases and a hotel for killers John Wick stands out amongst so many cliché action films before it due to not only outstanding actions sequences and choreography, clearly helped from the movies helmers, but also John Wick succeeds from its almost homage like feel with tongue in cheek dialogue, outrageous fights and the literal ability to count all the bodies Wick leaves in his path to revenge {76 by my count}. With a supporting cast made up of some great names, William Dafoe, Ian Mcshane and Adrianne Palicki, Reeves dominates as Wick the almost silent killer{well at least not very chatty} and makes this film his own. John wick's non stop adrenaline will keep you focused from the get go with the films start also being the ending, the pick off already sucks you in, Overall boasting a wonderful underground world of hit men and action that excels so many attempts at the genre in recent years John Wick makes for a pefect Friday night movie if you just want to sit down and have a bit of fun, Wicked and Wild is the film John Wick.

                                                                Imitation Game
                                                           Couldn't fake this one
Benedict Cumberbatch stars in this World War 2 biopic, as Alan Turing a world class mathematician who is recruited by the allies to assist in cracking the enigma code.
The code thought to be Germany's uncrackable line of communication during the war centers as the main focus in this historical true story of a man who achieves miracles and shaped how the world is today all through hiding who he was in the process.
Cumberbatch stars as Turing in what is being considered a strong possible Oscar victory for the star, with Keira Knightly’s portrayal of Turing’s close friend Joan Clarke also being a standout performance.
The Imitation Game is well directed film with an Oscarcalibre performance by cumberbatch as well as a strong supporting cast, That shows us the true portrayal of a man that gave everything whilst having nothing to gain,
That braved a world he did not suit and never strayed from his tasks.

                                          FROZEN
This one will Melt your heart

Disney's Frozen the highest selling animated feature of all time.. what more can I say. Frozen focuses on young princess Anna who must save her sister whilst realizing women don't need a man in there life { thanks Disney}. A heartfelt animation showing how false love can be and that the love of family trumps all. Frozen contains laughs, tears and song... such catchy songs ... let it go .. let it goooo..No Kyle Stop. With such lovable sidekicks like Olaf and The reindeer sven you will be sure to be made to rewatch this again and again by your little ones or {your partners}. Frozen is a great movie slightly overhyped in my personal opinion but it does what all Disney movies do, it sucks you in and before you know your frozen in front of your screen in enjoyment.

                                           DREDD
                              Don't dredd seeing this movie

The Remake of the Sylvester disaster or the same name, This action packed Sci-fi reboot kicks as much ass as Stallone kicked In his heyday. Dredd stars Karl Urban as our protagonist as he and his rookie sidekick { Olivia Thirlby }on he first day {typical action movie} become entangled with the local drug cartel. The Confrontation between the two ultimately leads to Urban and Thirlby getting locked in a housing complex from which the pair must make there way to the top to topple the gangs leader Big Mama. Dredd is an over violent, Visually overwhelming and oh so fun film, Urban brings a harshness to the character{the fact you never see his eyes is badass} and Thirlby does a great job as the rookie who develops into her own badass. Dredd is a must see for any action fan or anyone who wants to sit back and watch a lot of baddies who cant shoot for s*^t.  Judge Dredd has placed judgment and so have I this movie rocks.

Tom Hardy the key to this film

Locke is not a movie for everyone, if you have been lucky enough to see Ryan Reynolds film Buried you know what your in for. Locke stars Tom Hardy {the man} as a man who on one of the biggest nights of his life is forced to get in the car and drive to a life changing decision as his life crumbles around him. Hardy delivers an Oscar worthy performance as he so often does but what is unique about Hardy in this film is that he is the only person in this film, the movie follows Hardy on his drive whilst phone calls and decisions are made. Locke is a compelling and overall suspenseful movie that keeps you engaged and concerned about the man in the car. Locke is a film you only have to see once to appreciate it so Locke the doors, sit back relax and enjoy this wonderful film.

                                           But see it today

Edge of Tomorrow is a film that was marketed as a weird serious dystopian Sci-Fi film, but that is not as at all what this film was. Edge of Tomorrow is a fun-filled Sci-Fi action in which Tom Cruise's character Dies on the battle field only to wake up again the next day, best way to summarize the film think groundhog day plus independence day. The movie is smart, exciting, visually stunning and overall very well directed, Cruise shows as much as he's a bit bonkers in real life, he still has those action star chomps. Cruise cannot take all the credit alongside him stars Emily Blunt who plays a fantastic Bad-Ass in this movie and trumps Cruise in the action department. Edge of Tomorrow is a movie many missed this year, But is rated high on many lists rush out and see Edge of Tomorrow today.

                                     SNOWPIERCER
Snow way you should miss this one

Chris Evans leaves the shield behind in this underrated Sci-Fi gem of a movie. Snow Piercer is set in a dystopian future in which the last surviving colonies of humanity make home in the world train, a self-sustaining train that travels the world never stopping, the lower class citizens remain in the back whilst the upper class the front all while the frozen wasteland that was the  earth surrounds them. SnowPiercer is a bleak almost videogame like movie in which Chris Evans character and the lower class citizens attempt to take control of the train. This film has many fantastic Sci-Fi  which blends well with the bleak tone of the film, The movie you will love or hate given your taste in films but in the end Snowpiercer will leave you thinking snow doubt that.

                                           THE DROP
                                     Better catch this one

The drop, a film that gained my attention due to the man himself Tom Hardy attached to it who I believe is the best actor in the business today {see Locke, Warrior, Lawless}. The drop is a crime thriller that focuses on Hardy's and the late Gandolfini's  bar, the bar of said gentleman is chosen to be a drop bar for the night in which all illegal bets and cash deposits are kept and in which rotations are made between establishments every night. On the faithful night Hardy's bar has the cash they are robbed. The drop is a slow build with sublime acting from all {not just from my boy hardy} and has one of the best conclusions of the year. The story is a complex and engaging one with a strong moral message, and also gives us a good look in the criminal underground. The Drop is one of Hardy's finest and stands among the best films of the year, with an all star cast and a great final act the Drop just has to be caught.

                             The Legend Of Korra
                         Almost The Last Airbender

The Legend Of Korra is the continuation of The Last Airbender franchise with the original series being one of my favorite animes of all time, I had high expectations for this series and in the end I was not disappointed. Legend of Korra focuses on Korra,a young fully formed avatar trying to maintain peace in an almost steampunk like world, The series included 4 books each book tackling different subject matter and as the series continues Korra must face different villains and tackle many obstacles. The Legend of Korra has not received the same love as the original Avatar series but in some way I believe it surpasses it, The legend of Korras world Is amazing from the artwork to character design from the combat chorography to the many ways they incorporate bending {the bending sports tournaments are awesome}. The legend of Korra contains many adult themes and challengers the viewers to walk in the avatars footsteps as she attempts to grow into the avatar the world knows she can be. Overall the series contains much of what made The Last Airbender amazing with beautiful storytelling, lovable characters {Zuko still the best} diverse villain's  {season 1 and 3 contain the best ones} and just a dynamic and visually stunning world. The legend of korras finale may not have been as emotionally hard-hitting as the original but Korra still lives up to the legend that is Avatar,

 The Spectacular Now
That's how soon you should watch it

The Spectacular Now tells the story of Sutter Keely (Miles Teller Star of this year's whiplash), a party-animal who’s just been dumped by his girlfriend and hopes to win her back. Along the way, however, he starts to connect with one of the more bookish and mature girls in his school, Aimee (Shailene Woodley), which sparks not only a romance, but a path to maturation that starts to both enlighten and weigh on Sutter’s soul. The Spectacular Now is a hard hitting emotional teenage drama which attempts to show us how not only are we are molded by our parents but how the fear and realizations of that we could turn out to be what we wish not to be can mould us into who we are.

Like many of the best coming-of-age films, because the material is very familiar, the key to The Spectacular Now‘s success is in its insight, empathy, and fantastic performances for all of the characters involved. Teller and Woodley  on screen chemistry make the two electric, the pure innocence  of Woodley's character makes you so protective and loving of the girl on screen and the insecurity and vulnerability of Tellers portrayal makes you see why he is the way he is.

The Spectacular now takes a realistic approach to the  teen romance coming of age film with the final act  that feels earned and doesn’t let the audience off too easily, refusing to make its resolution too tidy while still leaving us in a hopeful mood. The Spectacular Now doesn’t offer much that is all that new or revolutionary, but it’s so excellently executed and overall enjoyable that its easy to get wrapped up in both its infectious charm and its deeply resonating drama. It’s everything a good coming-of-age story should be.

                       Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Don't shield yourself from this marvel movie

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is not only my favorite film of 2014 but it also overtook LOTR Return of the king out of my favorite movie of all time spot. The Winter Soldier is a movie we all went into not expecting much, Captain America was such a stereotypical hero and with Cap 1 The First Avenger arguably being the weakest in the stage one marvel films, expectations were not high {with the Russo brothers directing there first film also}. Boy were we wrong with this latest cap installment not only being one of the best films of the year in many peoples opinion,  but also again arguably the best of all the Marvel films. I am an die hard comic book reader and enjoy my heroes be it on page in carton or on film, but for me to take such a fantastical element such as a superhero and make it grounded to a point where it almost believable the Cap could be throwing his shield around down at the local pub was groundbreaking. Winter soldier delivered what I believe Oscar caliber written script and directed movie with the story relating to common day themes, the action being grounded and some of the best seen on screen {that cap and winter soldier knife fight.. dammmm} and with performances from all making each character even the man Captain America himself so relatable. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a film I could go about forever due to how much I love it, it is one that made Captain America everyone's Favorite Avenger and goddam do we want that shield. The Winter Soldier is just a Marvel.

NightCrawler
                     Comfortably Uncomfortable

From screenwriter-turned-director Dan Gilroy comes NightCrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Louis Bloom, a very unsettling intelligent young man living in Los Angeles,
who is seeking work of any kind. One night, Louis stumbles into the underworld of “nightcrawling” – a nocturnal profession where freelance video crews roam the city, striving to be the first to shoot up-close-and-personal footage of crime scenes, car crashes, and other assorted tragedies - material which can then be sold to the highest bidding local news station for a healthy price.

Jake Gyllenhaal dropped weight loss to play the character Bloom was noticeable, but it’s his ability to maintain dead-eyed enthusiasm and social In a movie that is both engaging and uncomfortable to watch that makes his performance so captivating and unnerving; an awards worthy turn, for sure. Nightcrawler tackles first world issues such as the media and the way news is obtained and delivered.  Nina {Rene Russo} a ready emotional target who is the TV executive who is driven yet vulnerable , Nina has dealings with Bloom throughout the film and is manipulated to do his will in some ways just the dinner scene alone where Bloom {Gyllenhaal} delivers a destructive monologue.

NightCrawler is a slow building neo-noir film that succeeds mainly from the caliber of acting delivered, With Gyllenhaal giving a career best performance as Lou bloom and the
film itself with its portrayal of society and media driven news, Nightcrawler delivers to us a uncomfortable but comfortable watch.

                                        WHIPLASH
                              Whipcracking good time

Sundance winner and Arguably one of the finest films of the 2015 Oscar season, With strong buzz around Best Picture and JK Simmons performance being the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor .Whiplash is indie filmmaking at its finest  with it's spectacular direction, soundtrack, and performances, It is clear why the film is being critically acclaimed by audiences. Whiplash center's around Andrew, played by Miles Teller {spectacular now, 21 and over} A promising young drummer who enrolls at a cutthroat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor played by JK Simmons {Oz, Juno} who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. Teller may have been overshadowed by Simmons powerhouse performance, But his interpretation of a young student's frustration as he attempts to achieve his dream cannot be understated {actually learning the drums for the film }. J.K Simmons's portrayal of a music teacher that does not believe in boundaries or limits, using vast musical punishments and verbal insults to belittle his students with somehow the ability to make you laugh while he torments (“This isn’t your boyfriend, so don’t come early”, he quips to an out-of-time saxophonist),   It is Teller's and Simmons's presence and chemistry that drive this film with the intense hatred between the two radiating through the screen through scenes such as Simmons pushes Teller until he bleeds and whimpers: “Oh no,” he taunts, “you’re not one of those single tear people”. Whiplash is a slow building film with some of the finest drum solos and musical incorporation into a film in recent times, and boasts a quivering finale that pushes and pushes until it breaks .Whiplash will drum what a good movie look likes into your head.

THE HOBBIT BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES
                        Conclusion Of Six Movies

Oh my god its over. The Hobbit conclusion has hit cinemas in a big way.. in a huge way... like there's a lot of things dying in this film which is sweeeet!. I am a huge fan of the middle earth collection with Return of the king being my favorite film of all time up until only recently, so this film hits close to home for me/ The Hobbit-Battle of five armies is the ending to a dynasty and what an ending this is, the film sees the continuation of the previous and picks up right where we left off. The movie contains Smaug {all be it for a short time} a bunch of dialougue and than a whole lot of action. The hobbit films have always received mixed reviews believed to not have the magic heart and depth to match the LOTR films before it, fairly or unfairly the comparison will always be made between the trilogys. Arguably the films have gotten better with the first being superior to the second and my belief this film trumps its predecessor. The Hobbit Story was originally supposed to be told in two chapters but ultimately they decided on three whether to stretch the story out for simple box office mojo or maybe Peter Jackson' desire to stay in middle earth { which I agree please don't leave } and for this I believe the film suffers. This film contains all that you want from a Hobbit movie Recognizable characters, huge battles and beautiful backdrops but also suffers from the same flaws as previous Jackson films, The length, the pacing and under developed side characters. Overall The Hobbit Battle Of The Five Armies does what it sets out to do and gives us an epic conclusion, yes the cgi is overdone and obvious is some places, the slow build becomes tedious but once the battle starts so does your desire to stay in middle earth. At the end of the day this film will leave you glad you got to go there and back again.

What can I say about into the woods?. Wellll what I can say is your going to leave this film thinking if only?. Into the woods the latest musical adapted from the phenomenon that was  the Broadway play of the same name brings together an all star cast and drops them into the fantasy world of fairy tales and happy endings. Now speaking of happy endings this is where I believe the film failed, Into the woods pulls the old fake ending on you in which you get swept up into thinking 'oh the movies ending', but alas as you stand to your feet it does what it should not have... it keeps going. I have not seen the Broadway play, so I don't know if the fim is following Its predecessor  or if it was simply a new direction but for me..it failed, with the last act being  morbid and overall unwanted, for we all want the happy ending.. is that not why we read fairy tails?. Now I am not a man of the stage, I cant say ive ever enjoyed musicals besides the odd animated feature film {tangled. the lion king} but these of course not being full length musicals means I cannot critique the artform. I believe Into the woods major flaw is not the musical direction, it is simply the direction where it falls flat. The cast all do an exceptional job given the task at hand {Chris pine delivers a very humorous performance}. The movie itself just did not work for me, for a movie containing fairytales it felt no where near as magical as it could have, the hype has built expectations for which the film cannot obtain { Meryl streep for best actress.. c' mon really} and frankly the length results in the film becoming quite tiresome. Overall had Into the woods finished when I wanted it to finish I would have left the cinema quite happy, but this was not the case so like the beanstalk Into the woods comes crashing down.

                       BIG HERO 6
                or maybe a higher score

So my first review and starting my blog off in a big hero way is a movie I have already seen multiple times. It is indeed the latest Disney movie, but also the first marvel adaption Disney has attempted Big Hero 6. Best way to sum up this movie is to quote the lovable Baymax himself 'oh no'. Now I mean oh no as in "oh no there goes my hard earned money repeatedly spent on the same film",  or " there goes the hard earned money of parents everywhere on... the oh so merchandisable and fantastic Baymax and his fellow heroes or should I say.. hiro's" he he. I loved this movie more than I care to admit, well I suppose  I just did admit it.. ignore that. The movie in no way is flawless it had it misses for sure , the villain was weak with not much substance behind him, the transition into the superhero team was so quick resulting in a rushed tempo, but for every miss it had the hits thrown were huge. The soundtrack, The characters and The world itself is incredible. Big Hero 6 is a film that has so much heart stemming from both tear jerking and fist pumping moments intertwined with characters you love. Overall you will leave this film wanting more and for sure wanting a baymax of your own. But don't worry you will get plenty of chances on the toyshelves.
